It's that time of the
year.
You know, the leaves are changing, there's a crispness to the air... wait a minute. This is Southern California, not Seattle. After that nice stretch of 100 degree plus temperatures, what else can I say. WELCOME BACK CSUN GEOGRAPHERS !!!!! First Council Meeting Since most of you seemed to have a varied schedule this semester, I had found a time that seemed to work well with most people's schedules. Therefore our first official meeting will be Wednesday September 26th at 3:15 PM. Sierra Hall 181. There has also been interest in Friday meetings by some people. Since I am on campus, Friday meetings are an option for secondary, less formal get-togethers. Let me know if you are interested. Envisioning California How do you see our state? On Wednesday September 19th, at the Skirball Center, is the 19th annual Envisioning California Summit. The summit "examines California’s rich history of immigration. The contributions of our immigrants – culturally, linguistically, economically – have made California a global innovator in industry, arts and science." There is a registration fee, but it is an excellent opportunity if California Studies are your thing. For more information click here. Take a Hike! Last year we deiced that it would be a great opportunity for some group hikes if we were to join up with the kinesiology department. They have a program that leads to an end-of-spring climb of Half Dome. The hikes usually start around the end of October. I assume that this year will be the same. The program overview can be found at their web page. Kinesiology Hikes. Anyone up for Mt Whitney ?Mt Whitney is the highest peak in the lower 48 states. At nearly 14,500 feet, it's a genuine high altitude climb, and it's right here in California. Located a few hours north of here in Inyo County, it is a great opportunity for those with mountaineering experience. It is not highly technical, yet will challenge you (if only with the elevation). I am hoping to put together an expedition for sometime in Mid-November (weather permitting)

Council Officers
Looking for a resume kicker? Need to add to that CV? Then think about running for office in the Geography council. We need a Vice- President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Please E-mail me with any nominations. Yes, you can nominate yourself. Elections will be held soon (Second official meeting), so what are you waiting for? Who are You? My name is Don McNish. I am the Geography Council President for the 2007 - 2008 school year. I am a Grad Student and a recent graduate of CSUN's Geography Undergrad program. I was a transfer student from Santa Monica College, where I was the Geography club president there, as well. Last year I served as the chief flyer-designer and Webmaster for the council. I will likely continue those roles as well as the added role of Presidency. I hope that this year will be an exciting one. We already have one guest speaker lecturing this semester, and I hope to have at least one or two presentations by our distinguished faculty. There are hikes planned and a couple conferences we can attend. I sincerely hope you will join me on the council this year. It is an excellent way to connect with other students, and to get to know the professors. It's fun too! If you have any questions please email me at donmcnish@yahoo.com Guest Lecturer Please welcome Jonathon Corbridge to CSUN on Wednesday October 10th at 6:30 PM.
